The Connect 4 Musical Instrument transforms a classic game of Connect 4 into a live musical performance. Two players face off in a standard game, but with each move, they collaboratively generate a unique musical composition.

The red player triggers the drum patterns, while the yellow player controls the melodic sequences. As the game progresses, lights flash to indicate the rhythm and position of each beat in the musical grid.

For red:

Each row controls a different piece of the drum kit. The bottom row controls the kick drum and the rows ascend as follows: snare, high hat, crash symbol, ride symbol, and cross stick snare.

For yellow:

Each row controls a different instrument sound, and each column plays a different pitch within one octave. Each row ascends one octave the previous one, so that the pitches you hear pitches climb as the game progresses and you enter new rows. The bottom row plays bass, then a different synthesizer sound (including bells, strings, and more) is heard on each row as the game continues.

The Real Thing:

This game also exists in a physical form (using a giant Connect 4 board modified with RFID cards, card readers, and LEDs). For questions (or if you’d like to bring giant Connect 4 to your next event), please email ben [dot] einstein [at] gmail [dot] com.

Guitar

While at the LightHouse's Media and Accessible Design Lab, I prototyped a Braille Guitar chords book, modeled after Mel Bay's Guitar Chords.

This book contains graphics of 10 common and easy to play open guitar chords. using large print, braille, and tactile graphics as instructions on how to play them. I designed and printed this book between 2023 and 2024.

Musical Instrument Design

What began began as experimental musical instrument (getting a fishing rod video game controller to make sound) ultimately became a song, then a music video, and then finally a comic book.

"The Fishing Song" is a tale of adventure and mystery about a group of friends who undertake a mythic and legendary quest. It is influenced in equal parts by the great epics of Virgil and Homer, monster movies from Godzilla to Cloverfield, and the brute physical comedy found in unconventional puppet fiction like Avenue Q and Team America: World Police.
